Information Technology - Computer Requirements

The University of New Hampshire School of Law has a campus-wide wired and wireless network, through which internet access is afforded to all students, faculty, staff, and guests. We use Microsoft O365 for student e-Mail and calendaring. We utilize a 100x100 Mbps high-speed line for faculty/staff and student internet access. Services that we offer include a web-based portal for e-mail, listserv, web-based chat software, and online access to grades and schedules.

While we do not require students to own a laptop, it is practically a must for anyone attending classes here. We do have a computer area in the library known as the Corral which house a limited number of Windows-based PC's and printers that are dedicated for student use. For e-mail and internal web-browsing purposes, we offer four dedicated terminals throughout the main building.

We cannot recommend any certain brand or platform of computer to purchase for use here at the University of New Hampshire School of Law. There are just too many good choices and too many personal preferences. We strive to offer support to all students and faculty/staff when it comes to using their preferred computing platform, and as such we have no affiliations or contracts with any particular manufacturer.

That said, our hardware recommendations are as follows:

Minimally: RAM: 4 GB / Hard Drive: 256 GB / Processor: 2.0 Ghz Intel i3

Optimally: RAM: 8 GB+ / Hard Drive: 512 GB+ / Processor: 2.0+ Ghz Intel i7

We support virtually all modern versions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and linux for internet access and printing, but our exam software requires the use of either Mac OS or Microsoft Windows (sorry, no linux, iOS, Android, or Windows RT).

Applications/Suites that are typically used here include:

Word Processing: Microsoft Word 2013, Microsoft Word 2011 (Mac)
Spreadsheet: Microsoft Excel 2013, Microsoft Excel 2011 (Mac)
Presentation Software: Microsoft PowerPoint 2013, Microsoft PowerPoint 2011 (Mac)
Office Suites: Microsoft Office 2013, Microsoft Office 2011 (Mac)

We do charge a fee for student printing at a cost of 10 cents per printed page (15 cents duplexed). Print balances are accessed via your student ID and money can be added to your account at any time using the vending machine located on the 2nd floor of the library (in the main lobby). If you wish to print from your laptop you must install our student printing client which is located here (linux users must be configured for student printing by the IT department).
