People ask ITTI : Instead of vaccine research, should we be spending our money on existing drugs to treat people who are already sick?
ITTI takes seriously the statement of Dr. Seth Berkley, Professor of Public Health at Columbia University and founder of the
International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), a public/private partnership.
For every two people we put on treatment worldwide, there are five new infections. The epidemic is still outpacing our ability to deal with it. The world is spending $50 billion on fighting AIDS right now. If the epidemic goes on, that could go as high as $80 billion or $90 billion. That kind of money is not sustainable over the long term, yet you can’t start treating people and then stop. We need a long-term solution.
