Global connections: distinguished Pierce Law IP alumni

Thirty five years educating IP professionals from nearly one hundred countries

During the 1970s Pierce Law founder Dr. Robert Rines and the IP faculty made it a programatic goal of the Pierce Law to bring important visitors from around the globe to educate them on building IP capacity in their countries. These were the first members of the IP global family at Pierce Law. They were invited to attend classes at no charge and were taken to import IP settings around the United States. Simultaneously, Pierce Law was educating “practice ready” intellectual property lawyers in the Juris Doctor Program.

During the 1980s, the efforts of the prior decade culminated in the founding of the first Master of Intellectual Property (MIP) degree that could be earned by lawyers and non-lawyers alike. In the following decade, Pierce Law offered the Master of Laws in Intellectual Property (LLM IP) degree to accommodate foreign and U.S. lawyers who earned an advanced IP law and practice degree.

This three decade endeavor has resulted in demonstrable and sustainable success, both in terms of statistics as well as success stories.

November 2009 : The Financial Times names Pierce Law now the US's foremost institute for the study of intellectual property law.

The growth of IP alumni associations harnesses the power of neworking

There are formal and informal alumni associations in the U.S. and around the globe. Pierce Law has a strategic plan to promote and grow these associations that benefit all members of the Pierce Law community - especially new graduates looking for career assistance and opportunities.

Focus on Mexico

Trustee Gloria Isla MIP ’88 of Mexico City, Mexico is leading efforts to formalize the Mexico alumni chapter. In addition to supporting the alumni network, the principal interest of the chapter is to promote Pierce Law to future students and to increase the importance and knowledge of intellectual property. With the help of its officers, the Mexico alumni chapter is actively planning activities and organizing Pierce Law alumni representatives in their country.
